Outdoor Patio Design and Styling

This is a new one for me, something I never fully thought about until I bought a house was the outside space surrounding a home. I have learned very quickly that the outside is just as important as the inside, it is a reflection of how you can invert your internal design. Especially where I live, the weather is pretty unpredictable, so you really have to think about it.

I’m going to share a few photos below with some general things to think about when styling your patio/backyard/outdoor space.

First thing is first, outdoor seating, it does not matter how small or how large your space is, there should be seating of some sort! (Honestly, that goes for every are in your home!) Don’t forget your bedrooms! The bed doesn’t count…

Second, a feature of some kind. Whether that be a water feature, a fireplace, garden, etc, you need something to drive your eyes to keep you interested or for gathering to make it a cozy space. I personally chose to do a chimnea as it requires less room and is a modern shape that pulls some attention.

Next, something else that is definitely worth considering is shade or greenery. I personally have very large old beautiful trees that create quite a whimsical feel and create a lot of shade. If you live in a city where there aren’t large trees, I would recommend a modern pergola or a chic oversized umbrella.

Last, do not forget to have some sort of light when it gets dark. You want to enjoy the outdoors as much as possible, but please be conscious of the type of lighting that you choose because it can bring down the elevated look that you have created.
